A great first week of banding at Manomet’s Trevor Lloyd Evans Banding Lab. We caught, banded and released 3 separate young Sharp-shinned Hawks (2 male and 1 female). As well as recorded over 20 new species to start off the season. Other birds pictured are a male Myrtle Warbler and Northern Cardinal. I also came across a SY male Summer Tanager on the property which is one of only a handful of records at Manomet in the past 50 years! *all birds caught, processed and released under federal banding permits for research purposes.*

Blue-capped Cordonbleu (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus) perched on thorn bushes that surround a Maasai community. The tribes use the thorny bushes to deter threats like animals and intruders. It also acts as a natural alarm system by making loud noises when moved and stepped on.

Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) with a pink band #26. According to the USGS, This 8 year old plover hatched in spring 2014 and was banded in January 2015 in The Bahamas. He returned to his breeding grounds on the spit in March, 2022 with an appetite for worms.
